Eurobiomed’s overview
Eurobiomed general objectives: a 3, 6 and 10 years vision
Since 2006, the Eurobiomed cluster supports the development of innovation
in the health sector within the Provence-Alpes-Côte-d’Azur and Languedoc-
Roussillon regions. Up to now, Eurobiomed has evaluated 546 R&D collaborative
projects, supported 455 among which 121 have been granted representing a total
R&D investment budget of 423 M€. Its support towards innovation, its processes,
results and efficiency have been recognized by the French government that
raised Eurobiomed among the best health clusters in France.
Eurobiomed operates in a French and European framework aiming at boosting and
maintaining the scientific, technological, medical and economic competitiveness
of the health sector with one final goal: the patient benefit.
In this context, Eurobiomed members have to answer new healthcare needs
especially regarding ageing and related chronic diseases, the evolution of
personalized medicine and rare diseases.
The Eurobiomed strategy focuses on 4 different axes namely:
- Therapeutics,
- In Vitro diagnostics and imaging,
- Medical devices
- E-health.
These 4 axes can permit to cross skills and know-hows to address complementary
technological challenges. Eurobiomed related supportive actions are led
according to areas of excellence that correspond to local academic and industrial
- Infectious diseases,
- Immunology,
- Oncology
- Neurosciences
In its new development phase, Eurobiomed is going now further regarding its
support towards innovation: from early stage companies to mature companies,
professional services are put on the reinforcement of industrial competitiveness.
To reach this ambitious objective, a series of supportive actions are developing
around two main pillars: entrepreneurial support and fund raising support. Global
strategy, market access and employment are the key words driving Eurobiomed
new actions.
Euromediag: a new dynamic for medical diagnosis
and a key initiative.
Comprised of 50 partners, Euromediag seeks to unite all the companies,
laboratories, organizations, and public sector institutions involved in medical
diagnostics in the Languedoc-Roussillon and Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur
A pool of actions
Euromediag aims at stimulating synergies between various competences as well
as generate an intellectual and financial tropism.
• Stimulate coordination and international partnership;
• Perform strategic analysis of its field and of its competitiveness;
• Improve its visibility nationally and internationally;
• Contribute to the creation of new training (at both university and professional
• Develop collaborative projects.

The European Diagnostic Clusters Alliance:
the way to achieve global competitiveness for
European diagnostic SMEs
The first European world class diagnostic cluster, - an international non-for-profit
organization with name “European Diagnostic Clusters Alliance (EDCA)” with
headquarters in Brussels (Belgium) - is one of the international flagship projects
of Eurobiomed.
This Alliance aims to foster and develop collaborative networking between
European diagnostic clusters in order to consolidate the competitiveness of their
SMEs. Access to non-EU markets (USA and Asia) for European medical diagnostic
SMEs is one more key objective of the EDCA members.
This initiative has been originally leaded by EuroMeDiag, the diagnostic cluster
of Eurobiomed, and Wal-Dx, the in vitro diagnostic group of the competitiveness
health cluster BioWin (Wallonia - Belgium). They have rapidly been joined by
other bioclusters: Biocat (Barcelona, Spain), Life Science Cluster Krakow (Poland),
Nexxus Scotland (UK), OBN (Oxford, UK), Uppsala Bio (Sweden), WAL-Dx/
BioWin (Wallonia - Belgium), ZMDB/BioTOP (Berlin-Brandenburg, Germany) and
Lyonbiopôle (Lyon, France).
Together they are gathering 360 diagnostic companies (mostly SMEs) and
around 50 Universities. The founding partners expect that other European
diagnostic clusters may soon join the club.

Activity Nowadays, cancer remains the leading cause of death
worldwide. Despite the different approaches used by
modern medicine, survival rates at 5 years are extremely low
for many of them, some rapidly becoming resistant to current
therapies, while others are not enough viable therapeutic
option. In this context, the company AGV Discovery
develop new therapies targeting key proteins involved in
the cancer process, especially for the treatment of cancers
caused by mutations of the RAF protein (7% of all cancers)
and RAS (25% of all cancers). Based on the knowledge and
the results already obtained by its partner, the Center for
Structural Biochemistry (INSERM), the company through
its multidisciplinary team results will be able to offer in the

of a human blood protein, apolipoprotein H; this protein
captures a considerable number of pathogens (viruses,
bacteria and parasites). The ability of ApoH to interact with
a multitude of pathogenic agents of different origins and
natures makes it possible to propose a universal binding
test. The enrichment potential of these agents enhances
the detection threshold, extends our knowledge on
microorganism infectivity and promotes the discovery of
new infectious agents. Fast, reproducible and cost-effective,

cancer research. The innovation of rupture, protected by
a patent (filed in 2008), involves the application of Cellular
and Tissue Biomechanics in the treatment of cancer. This
young branch of “Physical Biology“, little represented in
Europe, is completely changing our concept of cancerous
tumors. CC & C is therefore protected and has an innovative
approach. New very encouraging results : An initial series
of experiments in 2008 and 2009 validated the principle
on cultures of cancer cells in vitro in 2/3 dimensions. In
2012 the results of a “Proof of Concept” in vivo, made in
collaboration with the Institut Curie, Paris has validated the
principles of action of a constraint field on a tumor in vivo.

Keywords Immuno Photo Detection, Diagnosis, Oncology, Antibodies,
Activity The aim of SurgiMAb is to provide oncology surgeons with
an innovative real-time intraoperative diagnosis solution,
based on the immunophotodetection (IPD) technique.
IPD combines the specificity of monoclonal antibodies to
the sensitivity of fluorescence: a tumor-specific antibody
conjugated to a fluorescent dye is injected to patients.
Forty-eight hours later, the patient undergoes surgery,
and the surgeon takes off the primary tumor and all visible
nodules. He can then light up the operative field with the
optical device proposed by SurgiMAb and visualize induced
fluorescence. Infra-clinical size nodules, invisible even to the
expert eyes of well-trained surgeons, light up and can be
resected, contributing to the improvement of the surgical
procedure and to the completion of total resection of cancer
nodules. SurgiMAb has developed an injectable conjugate
adapted to colorectal and digestive tumors visualization.
Other conjugates will soon follow, targeting other cancers.

Activity The CIRAD leads actions of research and development
on tropical or emergent animal diseases of which some
are transmissible to humans. Among those the study of
the vectorial diseases, very sensitive to the environmental
factors is of a major importance. Research is undertaken
according to approaches of health ecology, associating the
field studies in regional networks - and observatories, with
top level analytical and experimental capacities.

Activity “ Ecole de l’ADN - Institut de Formation, Centre dInnovation“
in Nîmes, France, provides free specialist education and
information in biotechnology to the scientific community
and to members of public who are already familiar with
genetics. We teach through experiments in molecular
biology and many of those we train are under-graduates.
We do not require participants to have any training in life
sciences to participate. We have developed ‘DNA Tools’
(registered trade mark): kits for practical work in primary,
secondary and higher education to introduce students
to bio-technology. These kits are designed to encourage
problem solving, active participation and, of course, comply
with safety regulations. We provide continuing education
for people in other professions such as IT, health, law,
and the media. The school also acts as a catalyst creating
a francophone network of other DNA institutes: 9 other
schools have opened with our support since 2002 in France
and elsewhere.
