Patron¡¦s Message for 2011/12
Britain can be proud of the excellence of its products and
services in the most technologically advanced industry in
the world ¡V aviation.
The Aviation Industry deals with changes in airline
economics, enhanced security and an expanding European
Union and an ever changing World. Funding plays its part,
but so also do innovation and marketing. I am sure that
the Industry and BASEA Members will cope with all that
confronts them in 2011, 2012 and beyond and I hope that
they and their clients worldwide will successfully meet the
challenges ahead.
Good service and attention to detail offer the best route
to success. BASEA and its Members, through skilful
management of exhibitions, have created the right climate
for business and the promotion of the UK¡¦s excellent airport
products and services.
This directory and an extensive website, together with
events held worldwide offer customers good, simple
methods of finding the right product, the right supplier and
the support to meet their needs.
I applaud the efforts of BASEA¡¦s Board, Staff and Members in
supporting British Industry and for raising their profile in the
World Airports Market and for showing that ¡§Made in Britain¡¨
means ¡§Good Quality¡¨ and I wish them every success in the
coming year.

Message from the Chairman Message from the ChairmaHEADEnR
Airport traffic and business activity trends had been
growing strongly throughout the 1980s, 1990s and
early 2000s and manufacturers¡¦ and service suppliers¡¦
order books had been healthy for several few years.
We have seen a few difficulties since about 2001 and
rapidly rising fuel and security costs ever since then.
The general economic recession since 2008 has added
complications. Airport suppliers need to find new clients
as well as keeping existing clients, to give new business,
repeat business and to launch new developments. They
must continue to travel abroad, to explore new markets
and to act on the opportunities that future airport
developments, air traffic expansions, new airlines and
new routes offer.
In this, our twenty-fifth year, BASEA will as usual,
undertake an extensive sales and marketing, missions
and exhibitions programme on behalf of its Members.
During the course of the 2011/2012 year, BASEA will
attend and manage the UK pavilion at several major
airport exhibitions. The most important is Inter Airport
Europe the world¡¦s largest airport industry exhibition
in October 2011. Others in the USA - Aviation Industry
Expo (Las Vegas); Aviation Expos in China (Beijing) and
in India. We are also planning, with the support of the
UK Government, several Outward Trade Missions to
follow on from our recent successes in : Czech Republic,
Estonia, Latvia, Libya, Lithuania, Poland, Slovakia and
many other markets. We will visit some of these markets
again and we plan to visit Mexico, South America and
many more. At all of these events and others, we will
build upon the good relationships that we previously
established in those important markets for supply of
British products and services to their airports, airlines
and ground handling operators.
BASEA¡¦s recent trade exhibitions and missions have
resulted in several million dollars of orders for our
Members. Over many years, we continue to strengthen
the strong relationships with our American, Chinese,
European, Indian and other clients in expanding markets.
It is from this activity that BASEA Members reap the
benefits.
A survey of BASEA Members confirmed that their
combined airport sector sales has exceeded US$1
billion, with nearly 50% of sales coming from export
markets and some as high as over 80%. Member
companies employ large numbers of staff in the UK
and represent a formidable sales presence within the
Airports Industry worldwide.
What can BASEA offer Members ?
All of BASEA¡¦s services are geared towards supporting
its Members from : Frequent news bulletins; Supplying
details of airport tenders and purchasing requirements;
Passing on sales leads; Supplying up to date information
on airport developments; Supplying potential customer
contact details; And, Initiating meetings.
We actively promote our Members¡¦ products and services
and provide other opportunities through our extensive
networking structure, also by means of our website, our
Annual directory and via other marketing tools. BASEA
also presents an accessible portal to potential buyers and
agents, looking to make contact to purchase the very
best of UK airport supplies. Whatever the requirement
from our airport or airline customers, we undertake to
locate and recommend a trusted UK supplier.
Members can expect the support of a proactive UK Trade
Association that is anxious to succeed and measures
success in terms of the progress and the prosperity of its
Members.
What can BASEA offer The Customer ?
BASEA offers Customers a ¡§gateway¡¨ to the very best of
British airport goods and services ¡V the finest examples of
¡§MADE IN BRITAIN¡¨ which means it has good quality.

catering, de-icing, energy, fuelling, hydraulics, security,
terminal equipment, airfield equipment or every type of
ground support equipment, BASEA Member companies
can deliver all of them and support them ¡V anywhere in
the world.
The majority of our Members have a proven track record
in supplying to the Airport Industry worldwide. They
are familiar names and faces in most major and regional
airlines and in the International and Regional airports.
Some Members, who are already ¡§old hands¡¨ at supplying
UK airports, are looking to introduce their services and
products to the suit the global marketplace. BASEA can
assist by connecting these companies with you, the Buyer.
Some Members successfully ¡§crossed over¡¨ from other
industry sectors, such as I.T., rail, marine or automotive.
They bring and share their latest technology, innovative
services and product applications with new Customers
in airports.
Whatever their background, you can be assured
that the best of British suppliers gather under
the BASEA banner to offer modern technology,
top quality products, best practice and excellent
support services, at great value for money.

Members can provide those services also.
If this directory does not highlight a company
to fulfil your specific requirements, call us ¡V
BASEA has the capability to undertake a wider
UK search on your behalf.
Through this directory, BASEA takes pride in
introducing our Members to all of our potential
and valued Customers around the world. We
have confidence in the products and services
that our Members provide, ensuring that your

product or service, at the right price, please
contact us. BASEA¡¦s details are inside the back
cover of this book.
We look forward to hearing from you and to
perhaps meeting you at one of our industry
events. Most of all, we hope that you will
contact our Members.

Halifax-based A-Safe is the most innovative safety barrier system ever.
Its success lies in the polymor-based material that all the products in
the range are made from. Unlike steel, which simply dents or crumples
when a vehicle hits it, an A-Safe barrier has inherent, strength and
structural memory allowing them to buckle on collision, dissipating
impact forces and then springing back to the original state. There is
the added bonus of little floor damage when impacted. Naturally, this
greatly reduces the need for damage repairs, both to the barrier and
to the vehicle itself.
Be smart, be safe, be A-Safe.

conventional towing tractors range from the 4 tonne DC4 through
to the 70 tonne DC12-600. The Douglas-Kalmar range of towbarless
aircraft handling tractors dispense with the need for towbars, making
one man operations possible and offering airlines, ground handling
companies and airport authorities significant opportunities to reduce
their operational costs and increase their operational flexibility. Both
ranges of tractors offer models capable of handling aircraft up to and
including the Airbus A380. Towbarless tractors now account for a
large percentage of the world¡¦s fleet of aircraft towing tractors.
Douglas are a market leader having now sold units throughout
Europe, Scandinavia, North America, Middle East, North Africa, South
East Asia and the Far East including China and Japan. Douglas also
offer a range of pedestrian and remotely controlled aircraft handlers,
the Mu-Meter runway friction measuring equipment and military
ground support equipment, backed by a highly efficient after sales
service.

Founded in 1992, now operating across the UK and
internationally, Semmco is a design and engineering company
offering a range of specialist services for ground support
equipment and access solutions for the aviation and railway
maintenance markets. Providing engineering design and
consultancy for special projects and bespoke customer
requirements, Semmco is committed to quality, safety and
reliability throughout its innovative designs, manufacturing
safe and cost effective engineered solutions.
The expansion of the aviation industry has brought about
new health and safety challenges, with increased competition
for space at airports, a reduction in aircraft turn-around times
and global pressures on the industry for every-increasing
efficiencies. Activities airside and during aircraft turn-around
are the most hazardous and account for injuries that include
falls from height and muscular skeletal disorders. Each year the
Health and Safety Executive is notified of around 401 incidents
of air transport industry staff injuring themselves due to falling
from height and an estimated 538,000 people in Great Britain
working in 2008/09 suffered from a musculoskeletal disorder2
that was caused or made worse through poor and inefficient
lifting and handling .
Semmco has developed a range of specialist ground support
equipment to enable safe practice when undertaking activity
that requires manual handling of heavy or awkward goods.
Examples include:
¡E Cylinder trolleys
The fixed trolley is designed to carry 2, 3 or 4 cylinders
in oxygen or nitrogen configuration, with optional gas
booster systems.
¡E Nitrogen/oxygen charging units
Charging panels with clear safe to use controls, PED
compliant, retracting hose reel stowage options require no
servicing for 3 years.
¡E Universal Wheel and Brake Changer
Provides capability for B737 to A380 use. Innovative
adjustable roller design for wheel and brake changing,
eliminating manual handling issues.
Semmco has worked with some of the world¡¦s leading airlines
to design a fleet of bespoke access steps and platforms
conforming to the Working at Height Regulations that places
a legal responsibility on employers to ensure safe working at
height for all employees. The Semmco access platforms allow
aircraft engineers and technicians easy, safe and flexible access
to engines and cargo holds and for general maintenance
purposes.
Semmco¡¦s range of access equipment for aviation includes:
¡E Engineer maintenance steps
Towable chassis with light weight construction makes it
easily manoeuvrable to key service/maintenance access
positions with simple height adjustment range from 2.2-
4m.
¡E Cargo bay access steps
Fixed and variable height, side or front step access with
variable height working/access platform.
¡E Crown skin and APU access
Crown Skin - two modules which can be used
independently or together over the wing providing a safe
working platform during crown inspection and repairs.
APU Access - designed to suit aircraft type offering ideal
working height for APU maintenance and removal tasks.
¡E Docking access
Nose docking solutions
Tail docking systems
Underwing docking systems
¡E Helicopter platforms
¡E Access
Platforms designed to suit helicopter types and supplied
with access steps, hand rails and kick boards where
necessary.
In all cases, the implementation of Semmco¡¦s mobile ground
support and access platforms will enable its customers to make
real cost savings in terms of time and working efficiencies
as well as keeping the workforce safe and reducing the
risk of costly accidents and injuries. Semmco works with
its customers to design multi-functional safe equipment,
providing the customer with long-term solutions.

Rated A1 in register of Qualified Steelwork Contractors
John Reid & Sons (Strucsteel) Ltd, Reid Street, Christchurch, Dorset
started making Aircraft Hangars in the 1920s, the first being for
Louis Bleriot. They design make and erect hangars and their electromechanical
doors for the biggest aircraft flying today, or for the
smallest belonging to clubs or private individuals world wide.
Even their websites, www.reidsteel.com and www.reidsteel.aero
cannot tell the whole story: but there is a huge amount of information
on them so please have a browse. Because Reidsteel design and
manufacture the hangars and the doors; and because they export
half of their product, they have devised clever ways of doing so. In
particular their patented Archspan frame allows them to offer spans
of 200m or so, all in simple, bolt together construction.
Reidsteel also make industrial, commercial, logistic and hotel
buildings. They welcome your enquiries.
