IDS2008 Report
The 16th International Drying Symposium took place in Hyderabad, a historic city of India, November 9-12, 2008. Having experience of hosting several other events such as the International Workshop and Symposium on Industrial Drying in 2004, the annual events entitled World Forum on Crystallization, Filtration and Drying, WFCFD, (http://www.wfcfd.com) since 2006, IDS2008 provided us the opportunity to showcase our capabilities in the field of science and technology, and particularly in the field of drying technology. Through the website, http://www.ids2008.com, abstracts and papers were invited from all over the world.
Precisely 419 abstracts were received after the extended deadline of 31st of March 2008. A total of 294 full papers were received by the end of deadline 30th June 2008. All papers were reviewed by at least two referees. By the end of the review deadline, 180 papers were reviewed by IDS referees and the rest were reviewed by two referees from within the local organizing committee due to paucity of referee time and effort. The manuscripts were received in revised/modified versions and the rest of the manuscripts and many were edited by Professor B. N. Thorat. These 294 papers were divided into three volumes, A, B, and C and the papers classified according to 16 theme areas, e.g. fundamentals, modeling and simulation, drying of agricultural products and foods etc.. The three oversize proceedings volumes were made as presentable as possible. I am sure this set will be an excellent addition to every technical library- both academic and industrial- to have such high quality papers in bound form. CD-ROM was also made to provide the soft copy of the peer-reviewed manuscripts, which contained the subject index, author list and keywords. From amongst these papers, we selected some 45 papers for possible publication in special issues of DRT. The invitation letters to most of the authors were hand-delivered during the symposium. Besides, a special issue of International Journal of Food Engineering (Bepress Publications) will be brought out with specific focus on drying of Food and Agricultural products.
The IDS2008 program was spanned over 4 days, starting with the welcome reception in the evening of 9th November. IDS2008 was inaugurated by the chief guests, Dr. Narendra Jadhav, Vice-Chancellor of the world’s largest university, Pune University, IDS founder Professor Arun Mujumdar of NUS, Singapore and the Head of chemical engineering department of Institute of Chemical Technology, Mumbai, Professor G. D. Yadav. Professor Mujumdar delivered the first of the two plenary lectures followed by Dr. Jadhav. There were 6 keynotes in all, divided in three parallel sessions held on 10th and 11th November. The highlight of the oral presentations was the incorporation of a separate session on “Industrial Drying Systems” by several leading equipment manufactures of dryer from across the world. These 6 lectures were all invited lectures. This particularly popular and well-attended session was held as an afternoon session on 11th November. Another key feature of IDS2008 was the exhibition of drying equipment by 20 leading companies from around the world. This comprised of 9 overseas companies from Germany, The Netherlands, Australia, USA, Japan, Norway, China and Finland. The rest of the stalls belonged to Indian companies. The exhibition of the equipment on this scale was probably held for the first time in the history of IDS. The exhibition was held simultaneously with the three poster sessions. Participants were able to spend quality time with leading consultants and engineers all around the globe. The exhibition received excellent response on all three days. The list of exhibitors is attached for reference.
The number of delegates registered for IDS2008 was 309, excluding people who visited only exhibition stall areas, which was open to the general public as well. Like any IDS program for spouses, this time as well, accompanying spouses visited several places of tourist interest in Hyderabad. In addition, on the first day of IDS2008, several delegates took a trip to Ramoji Film City and also were treated to several artistic programs arranged exclusively for IDS2008 delegates. The list of the IDS2008 delegates’ country of origin is attached herewith for reference.
The evening of the 3rd day of symposium was earmarked for banquet and award ceremony. This included the cultural program as well. The list of the winners of the various awards is given at the end of this report. The get-together during banquet provided a unique atmosphere to the delegates as the venue provided excellent backdrop of historic India. The perfect weather in the evening along with a unique musical program added the glitter to the event in a manner aptly suited for showcasing a glimpse of the Indian culture.
The closing ceremony of IDS2008 was held in the evening of the last day, i.e., 12th November 2008. The remaining awards were given, which included the 2 best oral presentations and 3 best posters from amongst the three poster sessions. The closing ceremony also included several presentations by the organizers of regional drying conferences and IDS2010 Chairman, Professor Tsotsas. The presentation about the Polish Drying Conference 2009, Asia Pacific Drying Conference (ADC09), IADC, August 2009, and the Nordic Drying Conference (NDC2009) were made by respective organizing country chairmen.
About fifty IDS2008 delegates took the post conference tour to Golden Triangle, consisting of New Delhi, Agra and Jaipur. IDS2008 photos can be viewed on the website http://www.ids2008.com.
Overall IDS2008 is deemed a major success. I would like to thank the International Advisory Panel of IDS for giving me this unique opportunity of hosting such a prestigious event. It is needless to mention here the mentorship of Professor Arun S. Mujumdar, who has been the pillar of strength to the drying fraternity all over the globe, which helped us organize IDS2008 so successfully and without a hitch. Last but not least, the IDS2008 would not have been successful but for the enthusiastic participation of over 300 delegates from all over the world.
