Hi Alice,
It's good to hear from you as well! I miss everyone from the forums.
I just stay so busy with my work with the Dallas Hearing Foundation
and don't have time to read and reply to all of the posts. I usually
just scan the topics, but don't usually reply, because all of the great
advocates on here do such a wonderful job of helping each other!
I hope you are all doing well and enjoying your hearing adventures!
Thank you for clarifying that individuals cannot legally sell CI devices,
but CI centers can. The Dallas Hearing Foundation is the charity
affiliate of the Dallas Otolaryngology Cochlear Implant Center.
Equipment donations are used for patients who are unable to
pay full price, and for those who need a loaner while their
processor is being repaired.

Thanks Denise. I really need to evaluate our priorities and start cutting back. First thing...no eating out, and start cooking more. The rest will take a little longer to get my husband to agree to... :)

Hi Jamie,
When you are on a very limited income, you learn to be frugal. I don't
have a cell phone, cable TV (don't have a working TV at all, and haven't
for years now), dial up computer, etc. Don't get the newspaper, or even
listen to radio or TV news. NO clue what is going on in the world, and
that's fine, too. Used to get the National Enquirer until they raised
their subscription to $100 a year. They'll get over it. Share People
Magazine with someone else.
So, it's all what you're willing to do. I cook from scratch rather
than going out to eat or buying carry out. You actually can do without a
lot of things that people think are necessities. No IPOD, digital
camera, Blackberry, etc. I even get annoyed when I come home and someone
has left a mesage or 3 on my answering machine. And I ask for discounts
at any store and the vet. Get it, too.
SIMPLIFY, Learn to be frugal.
Denise
I would love for some of your frugalness to rub off onto me! I could use
some tightening of the belt in my household. :)

I feel for you. I'm just starting to experience just a tiny bit of what arthritis is like, in just one joint. It is quite painful. Good luck with the braces. Hope they help a lot so you don't have to stop doing what you love. :)

Actually the braces are not for carpal tunnel. Although it anyone on the
forum has that problem, check out JoAnn fabrics, because they have carpal
tunnel braces and regularly have 40% off coupons in the newspaper or via
mail if you're on their mailing list. Much nicer and a whole lot less
expensive than what I found for carpal tunnel years ago.
Problem is arthritis in the index finger of my right hand, and trigger
finger in the insult finger of my left hand. Because I craft a lot
(sewing, jewelry making, etc) I use my fingers a lot. And I'm
ambidextrous, so both hands got messed up.
Glad the insurance info helps.
Denise
Ah, Denise, that is helpful to know...I will contact Cochlear to get that
paperwork. It should help a lot.
Braces, huh? Carpel tunnel acting up? Not fun!!

Well said, Ted. :)
I wonder how many of those cochlear implant users who decide the implant doesn't work for them simply because they were not willing to put the TIME and EFFORT it may take to get them to work. Because my implant ear was virtually deaf for 50 years it has taken a lot of work to get that ear to understand speech, and I'm still not 100% there, and maybe not even 50% there. But, what I have gained from it so far has been so very much welcomed and appreciated, and I know I will continue to improve as I continue to use my processor. Some things just don't happen overnight. :) The implant is truly a miracle to me!! What I've been getting tickled over lately is when I listen to the radio, hearing songs I've heard all my life, but am now starting to actually hear the words in the songs, which was impossible for me prior to my CI! So much fun it is, listening to these songs now.
I rejoice for those who DO get immediate understanding of speech, etc. I know most of them had normal hearing most of their lives and recently lost their hearing. I understand for those people their hearing loss is devasting for them, having had normal hearing prior to their loss (my sister was one of them). So I am very happy they were able to regain what they have lost. Since I've had hearing loss most of my life, whatever I gain is more than what I had before, and I'm happy with that. I'll never have normal hearing simply because I was born that way. I'm grateful to have what hearing I do have, and I'm happy for others who can gain whatever they can when they've lost theirs.
Just my thoughts and feelings of the day! Have a good one!
Jamie

I'm sure that there are people reading this group right now, wondering whether it will work for them. There don't seem to ever be any/many failures. The one or two that I have read about, are quite insignificant, when one regards the huge numbers of people now undergoing the implant surgery. Some so called failures have got nothing to do with the implant itself, its just that some people have to work a bit harder than others, to achieve the same results. You will be amazed that you will still hear even better in the future, comparatively speaking, its still early days for you :-).

Debbie - you have had an incredible first week!! I'm really impressed with how well you are doing already! You've got the right attitude...be happy with the little things...and soon the little things will amount up to some really big improvements! Some things will take time, but they will come for you, for sure!
Continue to post your progress! And enjoy. What I did for my rehab was hooked my CI up directly to a MP3 player and listened to my favorite station. Over time I gradually picked up more and more words and understanding music, and now I'm starting to get more and more words from songs which I never was able to do when I was younger. You may want to consider doing something like this, if you enjoy listening to the radio.
You are doing fantastically well!

First of all I would like to thank all of you who have been so kind and supportive of me. It really means a lot.
It is still my first week after activation. 2 days of long visits. I ahve 2 more coming up the first week of May.
I never was talked to as a child in my family so i did not learn much hearing speach but i learned to speak. I am getting words here and there. When in the car i hear words and I tell Robert what words I hear and he ahs confirmed theya re correct. I can get the weather on the radio. Last night we fisited a couple and when i sat down and not looking at him I actually understood jerry say Hi Debbie and I turned and said hello then turned to Robert and said "hey, I heard him". I was happy.
Audie, Brook has told me the important thing is to try not to get everything right now but at least one or 2 worods. I feel I'm doing well.
In the afternoon yesterday I turned on MTV Classic Rock station and was bopping to Zeppelein and AC/DC. I can hear the music great but not the words.
Conversation has always been impossible for me.
I will pray that in the future I can understand a conversation.

8a. Phone Questions
Posted by: "Daniel" HHIssues@aol.com hhissues
Date: Mon Apr 26, 2010 1:58 pm ((PDT))
Hello everyone,
Last week, I got to use the phone a little for the first time in one of my auditory verbal therapy sessions.
Whereas the therapist would ask me simple questions such as "What's your name?" or "What are you doing this weekend?" or "Would you want some pizza for lunch?" and I did pretty good in my responses.
I know it may not sound like much to some of you or to some of the people out there. But for someone who was born and grew up profoundly deaf, it was considered an improvement in my case, smile.
Anyway, the reason for this post is that I thought I'd get some input from other CI phone users. Such as the volume level? Which program should be used? The placement of the phone next to the CI? Are there certain phones that are more compatible with the CI than others, etc?
For starters, the therapists just handed me one of hers and I also thought that the voice sounded a little soft over the phone.
I'd appreciate it. Thanks in advance!
Dan

Dan,
This is one of those things where you will find what works best for you
by experimenting.
If you use t coil, you may find setting sensitivity to zero to help.
You are mapped with 4 programs, so you can try each and compare the
results. Then on the one you like the best, try different settings for
sensitivity and/or volume.
Tyhe placement of the ear piece of the phone will depend on where it
sounds the strongest.
If you favore t coil, then you want to look for phones that have the
best rating, (m4/t4 for cell phones, not sure what it is for landline
phones). If at all possible, try before you buy.
There is no one size fits all approach, so dont be afraid to experiment.
